Weinen aka crying comes easy for some, but it’s an expression of emotions that can carry a lot of shame for others. So much shame that there are plenty of us who can’t remember when was the last time we cried. In this episode, Jake and Gabriel talk about Oktoberfest, before going deep with the topic of ‘weinen.’

#30 Heimat

Monday Aug 22, 2022
Warning: This podcast speaks Denglish.
1.4 million people living in Austria are ineligible to vote in the upcoming presidential elections. There are many people living in Austria that were not born in the country. And Austria doesn’t always make it easy to feel at home.
Jake and Gabriel explore with the TWG community what ‘Heimat’ aka. 'home' means to us in a world in which many of us are living far from where we grew up. And even if you are living in the place where you were born - this doesn’t necessarily make it the place where you feel at home.
Let’s just say, things get deep and philosophical.
What do we specifically talk about?
+ How do we (including lots of input from our Austria-based community) define home
+ What is it like not to have a home in the traditional sense
+ What things do we identify with that feeling of home – people, food, language, a place?
+ How did Gabriel’s grandma end up in a bottle of pumpkin seed oil
And much more!

#29 Drinks with friends or on a date: who pays in Austria?
Monday Aug 15, 2022
Monday Aug 15, 2022
Warning: This podcast speaks Denglish.
In this episode, Gabriel and Jake unpick and examine what the deal is when it comes to 'einladen' when you're out with friends or on a date in Austria.
Who pays on the first date? Is shouting a round of drinks a thing? If you're on a date and it's going really badly, is it okay to sneak out the back without paying?
This is the worst guide to etiquette in Austria when the bill arrives at the restaurant table.

#28 The worst guide to Austrian traditions
Monday Aug 08, 2022
Monday Aug 08, 2022
Warning: This podcast speaks Denglish.
In this episode, Gabriel and Jake have the podcast living up to its true name as they deliver what is, quite possibly, the worst guide to Austrian traditions.
However, it's certainly worth it as they have plenty of laughs along the way. Plus, they get into a fascinating discussion about TikTok vs podcasts, attention spans - are they shrinking – and if the overwhelming amount of content being served up to us on a daily basis is a good or bad thing.
